This collection of 22 selections from Cab Calloway over a 12-year period can easily be recommended as a fine introduction to the vocalist, humorist, and bandleader. While not a greatest-hits, most famous all-time jive numbers, or definitive compilation, there are many tracks that define Calloway both vocally and instrumentally. “Viper’s Drag,” “Minnie the Moocher,” “The Man from Harlem,” “Nagasaki,” “Jumpin’ Jive,” and more tasty tidbits are included. While there are more comprehensive or definitive items available, this is a pretty good one, especially as a starter set. – Michael G. Nastos
