  • We Say...

For his last few albums, bassist Ben Allison has been looking to stretch past the chamber-jazz leaning of his early releases, incorporating more rock influences. On Think Free, his ninth full-length, Allison continues to stretch out — check the in-the-cut funk drums of the cheekily-titled “Kramer vs. Kramer vs. Godzilla” or the syncopated, almost Radiohead-y “Platypus.” Opener “Fred” is probably the most successful distillation of Allison’s attempts to fuse his lyrical playing and yearning pop melodies.
