Four masterful versions of old songs — two hers, two covers — recorded live for radio.

The recent rehabilitation of Chan Marshall as a live performer, now that she's kicked a bad drinking habit and gotten her clinical (although not stylistic) depression in check, is a remarkable thing. You can hear her renewed confidence on this solo acoustic EP, recorded at a session for KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic in the wake of this year's pretty accurately billed The Greatest. Most striking is the cover of Otis Redding's R&B heartbreaker "Remember Me," played here at the piano in slow motion, the minimalist procession of chords and Marshall's billowy voice reverberating with so much dark, ghostly authority it becomes a lover's curse as much as a plea. Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man," sung with acoustic guitar as "Ramblin' Woman," is also molasses-slow, but otherwise faithful to the original, a small surprise from an artist whose covers can verge on the unrecognizable (see 2000's The Covers Record). The guitar-driven "Good Woman" is a luminous, stripped-down readings of a song from 2003's You Are Free.
