Trumpeter-composer Dave Douglas's first big-band outing

  • We Say...

Trumpeter-composer Dave Douglas assays his first big-band outing with an assists from his mid-'80s mentor Jim McNeely (who rearranges four of Douglas's small-ensemble numbers) and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. The music is both weighty and impressionistic, with the three-song suite Douglas wrote during the Obama campaign (originally titled "Letter to America") standing out despite being broken apart for the beginning, middle and end of the program. "The Presidents" features ascending, august passages that nod to pomp and circumstance, especially in the martial drums. "Campaign Trail" is a jaunty workout with traces of New Orleans imbued in its fleet-footed cadence. And "Blockbuster" is a wild and woolly finale much different from most of the rest of the disc in both its "outside" feints at cacophony and its boffo crescendoes.

McNeely's arrangements on the other four tracks hew the ambiance of their earlier incarnations but with glowing pastel sonorities reminiscent of Gil Evans. "A Single Sky" (originally on Strange Liberation) has the most spirited and extensive solo passages, especially from Douglas, who is both pensive and propulsive as the leviathan performance unfolds. A Single Sky is hardly the best introduction to Douglas's whirling potpourri of styles. But fans familiar with his work, and big band aficionados, will find much to enjoy here.
