There's a certain kind of album that brings the sunshine spilling into your life, no matter how overcast your mood. This debut offering from Irish trio Hal is one such, a glorious, uplifting collection of songs drenched in west coast influences, laced with meticulous harmonies and boasting hooks that seem to have existed forever. Part of its familiarity derives from the various influences feeding into the band's sound, particularly the falsetto harmonies frequently crafted into grand Wilson-esque confections. Likewise with the arrangements: "My Eyes Are Sore" is a sublime, multi-sectioned "pocket symphony" incorporating strings, lap steel and harpsichord, while elsewhere there are nods to the likes of Nilsson, Aztec Camera and Tim Buckley. Best of all is "Don't Come Running," a joyous pop anthem which blends the country-funk spring of the Band and Little Feat with a lead vocal that sounds like someone's channeling Jerry Garcia.
