Violin-and-piano works from the composer who gave the Red Violin its voice

  • We Say...

John Corigliano has always carved his own niche in the classical music world. His concertos attracted great acclaim; his first symphony earned him the prestigious Grawemeyer Award; his "Altered States" soundtrack gave him some wider visibility. But it was Corigliano's score to "The Red Violin" that won him an Oscar and has created a kind of cottage industry for the composer. He's done a Red Violin Concerto and a series of smaller pieces also based on the soundtrack, several of which appear here. The "Red Violin Chaconne" marries the sounds of Bach's landmark works for solo violin with the liquid piano playing of Debussy to great effect. "The Red Violin Caprices" are unaccompanied works that seem to follow the eponymous (and real-life) violin as it passes through the centuries — there are echoes of Bach again, but then of Paganini and of Kreisler.

This collection begins with Corigliano's Sonata for Violin and Piano, one of his most "classical" scores, though still an accessible one; the real winner on this disc is the "Fantasia on an Ostinato," originally a solo piano work and subsequently orchestrated and now rearranged for violin and piano. This technically demanding work manages to be a charmer as well, using a quote from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony as its musical DNA. As for the performances, the Naxos label has once again found, in violinist Ida Bieler and pianist Nina Tichman, musicians who may not be household names, but who are thoughtful and convincing performers.
