A fitting end to this blue waver's time on Alligator.

  • We Say...

Talk about going out in style: nothing against the fine sidemen on Roadhouse Rules, but Lonnie Brooks’ relaxed, rhythmic and barrel-chested vocals carry his final Alligator effort (not counting the ’99 Lone Star Shootout with Phillip Walker and Long John Hunter). He’s at a roadhouse roar on the opening “Hoodoo She Do” and especially the cataclysmic “Rockin’ Red Rooster” finale. His phrasing elsewhere ranges from more-in-sadness-than-anger on “Too Little, Too Late” to alternately pleading and stoic on “It’s Your World” to defiantly lacerating on “Treat Me Like You Do Your Dog.”
