Too Many Files!

SERIOUSLY! I just downloaded my first Audiobook, and eMusic downloaded 114 files! REALLY??? Are they KIDDING??? 114 files to listen to ONE Audiobook? (Good thing I didn't pick AN ECHO IN THE BONE...When I checked that one, it would have been OVER 600 files?

ANYWAY, is there anyway to combine these files, so I don't have hundreds of files cluttering up my iTunes? (I'm on a Mac, by the way, if that makes a difference!) If eMusic is going to download hundreds of files for every audiobook, I'll have to go back to Audible!

If you're on a Mac, you might want to check out this site for Doug's iTunes Join Together program.

There's a free version and a $7 shareware version. Since you only need the basic functions, the free version should be ok.

The output is AAC files, put those can easily be reconverted back to mp3 by putting the output files in a playlist in iTunes, selecting all, and then going to the menu and selecting "Advanced > Convert Selection to mp3". I would joined the files by chapter and then batch convert the whole shebang back into mp3s at one time.

If you're going to listen to them on your Mac, you won't need to reconvert them to mp3, only for certain portable players.

Well I for one would rather have too many files than two or three audible files with their @#$% encoding that won't play on my non ipod mp3 player.

So you have a choice of mp3 files that will play on any player and audible files that will have to be converted before they can play on anything not supported by itunes. Hmmm...Unless your planning on listening only on itunes my choice would be emusic.

You know you can group all the audiobook files into a playlist on itunes too.

If you ever have to restore or upgrade your computer, those audible files won't play until you go back and verify with audible that they're legitimate. Trust me, I know. It was a pain in the ass. That's when I converted mine to mp3 and said goodbye to audible for good.

Go back to Audible. I've been a member of both Audible & eMu, and Audible's audiobooks are so much better than eMu's there's not a word to describe the comparison.

And, the price is the same! Audible's books are about $9.95/each. Not all of eMu's are: the 2 credit books are $19.90/each.

eMu never runs a sale, as does Audible.

To put eMu's books into iTunes Audiobooks playlist, one must change the type on all files. Even then, individual files may not transfer, requiring more fiddling. eMu's multiple files don't always translate completely. Just today I found a stray file, 25/104.

And, even if you manage all that, the book won't hold your place. Leaving the audiobooks playlists will lose your place: you'll have to go file by file to find which one is more than zero, and hope that's where you left off.

Audible is far superior to eMu it's like comparing a Volkswagen to a Rolls Royce.

If the DRM is what bothers you, good luck. Audible supports hundreds of players; if yours isn't supported, it's way off the beaten track. If not, eMu doesn't save you any money and causes a lot more grief.

eMu wafted a free book by me recently, and I took advantage of it, even though I knew better. I'm now sorry I did. Next time, I promise, I'll know better.

In the meantime, I've bought new releases from Audible for $9.95, one credit books on eMu. They import seamlessly, no place-holder problems, no hassle, no muss, no fuss.

To each his own. I find it easier to find my place when I don't have to search through a multiple hour track.

As for my player, it's less than a year old and is a quality brand. If audible doesn't support it, it's their loss.

I just downloaded one on my trial and it was 259 files! No problems whatsoever. I've tried Audible too and it sucks! If I buy an audiobook I want to be free to play it as I see fit.

Either get used to several files and learn to group them in a playlist (shouldn't have to change type unless it's a mac thing) or go back to Audible.

What is it about Audible that sucks?

The purchase date doesn't make it mainstream, or worth supporting.
Walgreen's, CVS, even Dollar Stores, sell MP3 players. If it's an odd brand or one that makes up a very small percentage of Audible's subscribers, it's not worth supporting. That's not unique to Audible.

Audible offers support for hundreds of players, and the format requires absolutely no tweaking or fiddling to make it play.

If more than one eMu audiobook is downloaded, the parts become intermingled, to the point it takes some time to separate and organize. I know, I just had the experience today.

I've bought audiobooks from Audible, Amazon, and some other sales venues. I've ripped them from CD. eMu's audiobooks are inferior in all respects. I'll continue my Audible subscription as I have for about 5 years, and I refuse to be seduced by eMu's freee audiobooks pop-ups from now on.

Hey, guys—
We’re working on the bulky number of audiobook files, hoping that within a month the number of files per book will be greatly reduced. For most titles, the number of files will correspond to the number of discs that the hard copy audiobooks contain. So the majority of titles will be in the 10-20 file range. That should make downloading and organizing a lot easier.

I, for one, love Audible. It has worked on all my Creative mp3 players. It allows you to download to 3 different devices. It bookmarks your place with no problems ever. Periodically, they have great sales and I have gotten some wonderful audiobooks for $4.95 a pop. Their customer service is immediate and very helpful. And--I have gotten no more than 5 files for very long books.
So, the choice is yours.

the number of files is problematic but no different than if you had ripped the audiobook yourself... Also keep in mind that depending on your setup it might be a good thing; itunes and iPod have some nice feature for remembering where you leave off, not all software or players do.

see other suggestions for joining files if you really want to, however proper audiobook support on iPod is achievable; Using iTunes 8 or better just change the "type" to audiobook in itunes. That has been well documented in numerous places. Search for "convert audiobook mp3 itunes"
