BlueBeat Music

Well, well. WTF is this all about?

Anybody know the lowdown on BlueBeat Music?

The LA Times has a story, but it doesn't seem to have much info beyond the fact you can apparently buy Beatles for $0.25 US / track.

Woof?

Well I just added an album to a cart and it offered my 3 prices - Amazon around $8, iTunes around $12 and BaseBeat (not Bluebeat) at $2. This makes them seem more like a brokerage or clearing house than a true seller. However a look at the BaseBeat site links it straight back to BlueBeat.com.

So, I just bought Aswad's first album for $2.30 ($0.30 transaction fee) all via PayPal so my card's no at risk. Their DLM runs in a browser window and seems to be pretty quick by I have to leave it running while I go to work. Will report back later...

This site seems to have some interesting features, but kind of hard to nail down how it works. Eg, you can put together and share playlists, but there are restrictions as to how many songs from what sources you can listen to how often (similar to Pandora). Possible that what you are paying for is the ability to stream full albums...?

Well, everything seems to have gone fine. I have the album in iTunes (not just streaming) as an MP3 @160kbps with lo-res artwork. Seems far more legit than those Russian sites - good layout, editorial content etc. - but I still feel that there must be a catch somewhere.

It's not over. You can still buy the music. It's possible they will win the suit, based on their weird audio/visual loophole.

I'm waiting to buy anything until this is settled...

The MP3s themselves aren't DRM'd, I can't see how the DLM is a DRM system, it runs right in the browser.

Oh kee-rhist.

"Psycho-acoustic simulation"? Great. More whing-nut publicity for Santa Cruz. Like we really need help convincing the rest of the world we're all bonged-out, mumbling surf bums.

Woof.
