The label Anthology of Recorded Music, Inc. is dropping alot of contemporary classical over at Amistreet, most are less that 20 cents a track. For example, Bang on a Can Live, Vol. 1 is less that $2.

Thank you. I would never have found this stuff without this pointer. I've picked up the Cygnus Ensemble and Speculum Musicae for under $2 apiece.

Looks like these things just kept coming all night long. Check out Martin Bresnick, performed by the Alexander String Quartet, among many others.

Since many of these artists are new to me, I have found the information at DRAM very helpful. New World Records is well represented there.

Thanks for the hint, Plog42; New World Records has lots of interesting music.

Also, I've just about given up on eMusic; a subscription seems like such a waste without significant per track savings; I'm finding less every month worth the asking price. AmieStreet looks like a good way to occasionally try something new. So, I jumped to join when I went there and saw the offer to "get 75 FREE TRACKS!" to "Join now for free". OK, it doesn't cost to subscribe, so I can't (much] complain, but I'm wondering; what's that "75 free tracks" offer all about? Are they just referring to specific tracks that they typically offer for free (but not to free DL credits)? Can any of you AmieStreet fans help explain what they mean or how that works?

Thanks.

>Thanks for the hint, Plog42;

Plog sounds sorta nasty when you say it that way.

Here the highlight of the afternoon for me: John Anthony Lennon, track one is played by the Kronos Quartet, the rest by Continuum.

I know nothing about Amie Street giving away "75 free tracks," I joined when they were giving away $5 in store credit to join. Tracks are priced low then they work their way up based on downloads, potentially as high as 98 cents. There are often great deals, but you have to pick through alot of junk to find the diamond.

Yeah, it turns out the 75 tracks are a playlist of tracks from current albums that Amie is promoting, which also are available for download as a group for free to any member.

So.. technically, you do get 75 free tracks (80 now, actually), but you don't get to choose them. That said, there are a lot good songs on the list.

Note:
Downloading the list as a whole will use up your whole 8hr allotment of free tracks. Make sure you haven't already dowwnloaded anything free in the last 8 hours, or you won't be able to download all the tracks with one click.

Here the highlight of the afternoon for me: John Anthony Lennon...

Thanks -- Sounds interesting. I may have heard something of his played on guitar by David Starobin, otherwise don't know anything about him. I'll give it a try.

And thanks for the explanation, Frogkopf; after the fact, I realized that might be the 'offer'.

>whole 8hr allotment of free tracks

Do you know what the allotment is? Seems like today there has been no limit on the Anthology of Recorded Music.
frogkopf Nov 7 at 11:09 PM EST RE: Contemporary Classical at AmieStreet
in response to the message by Plong42
It's 80 every 8 hrs. I've hit it on many occasions. There have been many times where I have had 10 downloads left of my allotment, found an 11 track album and could only download 10 of tracks individually, and had to wait to download the last track.

Their counter keeps track of the exact time you use up each free download, and you are credited another download to replace it exactly after 8hrs, so it is possible to go up and down in the amount of free downloads left all day. It may have seem like no limit to you, since your free dls were being replaced at same roughly rate as you were using them up.

Earlier today, I had a situation where there was a 15 track album I tried to snag, but I only had 12 freebies left. I waited a minute, and 4 of the tracks went to 15 cents, so I was able to get 11 tracks free and the others for 60 cents total.

Wonderfull earcandy for art bears:
Jack Vees: Surf Music Again

"Jack Vees was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1955. His early musical training was in piano and tuba, but he soon switched to the electric bass guitar. He attended Glassboro State College and went on to receive his M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts, where he studied music composition with Morton Subotnick, Stephen Mosko, Louis Andriessen, Vinko Globokar, and Bernard Rands.

Vees's works have been performed throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe by numerous ensembles and soloists for whom he has written, including Ensemble Modern, the California Ear Unit, Zeitgeist, Hemispheres, Jeffrey Krieger (electric cello), and Amy Knoles (electronic percussion). He performs his music with his own ensemble Chez Vees, which consists of electric oboe, percussion, computer/midi electronics, and Vees on bass and electric guitars. His mastery of extended techniques on the bass led him to write the Book on Bass Harmonics (Alfred Music Publishers, 1981) which has become a standard reference on the subject. Vees is currently operations director and instructor of electronic music at Yale University's Center for Studies in Music Technology.

Major performances of Vees's works include New Music America, Neue Musik New York/Cologne, Bang On A Can, and Soundings. He has been commissioned by Ensemble Modern, Music In Motion (with the California Ear Unit), the Minnesota Composers Forum, Zeitgeist, and Corn Palace Productions among others, and has been in residence at Duke University (with Chez Vees) and the Yellow Springs Institute (with oboist Libby Van Cleve and composer Eleanor Hovda). Vees has also participated in numerous collaborations with choreographers and video artists."

Scott Fields - Three long tracks (60+ minutes each) free-form jazz. It is not really classical, but alot of the NW releases are fringe / avant garde anyway. He is into Dembski-like modal scales and such, so this might not be for everyone.

For 15-20 cents for an hour track, it might be worth a listen.

I'll have to say I'm surprised at the over all high quality of the music. I've picked up about 30 free albums and the same amount of albums for around a buck.

Same here, I am days behind in dloading these things, and it will be months before I get it all listened to. What little I have spent so far on a few longer tracks was chased REC's and I have made plenty on REC'ing the better tracks. In all, a serious modern music collection for free.
